10/27: How to Eat Organic on a Warehouse Budget

I know, I've been there: Plenty of moola to purchase what I want to eat and when and where and having no qualms about throwing away the leftovers.
I know I've been there: Counting pennies to make sure there’s something on the table for the kids to eat and being creative with the leftovers so they last a week.
Yep, I've been there, and there.
Currently I am here: Trying to fit organic into my warehouse budget. How was I able to go from having "everything" (according to my kids), in the cabinet and fridge organic and feeling good about what I was feeding my family to barely able to afford food and still feeling good about what I am feeding my family?
Well, first, there is a list from foodnews.org that lists the "dirty dozen" things that should be purchased organic and the "clean 15." Start there. Keep those things organic……at least every other time you buy them.
When it's not organic's turn at the grocery, then purchase local and purchase in season.
Follow my Rule of Halves. Half-sies are better than none-sies. For example, stretch the bag of organic rice by using 1/2 organic and 1/2 not. At least you’re increasing your nutrient values, and decreasing your pesticide exposure.
Products with a higher fat content, such as milk and butter, contain more hormones, antibiotics, pesticides and toxins than other products. This is because these "bad" things are stored in fat, just like when they are stored in the human body. So, milk and butter should be organic, but I know and you know from being "there" that they are very expensive in comparison to mass produced milk and butter. SO WHAT DO WE DO???? Every other time buy organic and when it's not organic, look for products without artificial hormones, possibly go to local farms where you can speak with/contact the producer and ask questions.
Yep, it's not easy, it takes a little creativity, BUT, it's definitely worth every penny.
Half-sies, it works, and maybe the kids will learn a little something too!
Be well,
